This year's La Película festival focuses on Cuba
On the 18th of February, the La Película festival will start in Prague's Světozor Cinema. For six days viewers will have the opportunity to delve into Spanish and Latin American films. This year, the festival will focus also on Cuban history.
The Spanish film festival La Película, supported by the capital city of Prague, has a long tradition in the Czech Republic. It has evolved from a small project into a long-awaited and sought-after event.
A mother who lost her son
This year's festival will introduce a varied range of recent Spanish cinematography. In addition, it will focus on Latin American cinema and will also show movies related to Cuban history.
The first film of the festival will be the psychological drama ‘Mother’, directed by Rodrigo Sorogoyen. The audience will be drawn into the story of a woman who loses her six-year-old son. After ten difficult years, she meets a boy who bears a striking resemblance to her son. The main character, Marta Nieto, received the Orizzonti Award for Best Actress for her performance at last year's Venice Film Festival. Nieto and the film’s director will be guests at the Světozor Cinema in Prague.
Oscar nominee with Banderas
Pedro Almodóvar’s award-winning film ‘Pain and Glory’, starring Penelope Cruz and Antonio Banderas, is another treat at the festival. Pain and Glory’ was nominated for Oscars in the Best International Feature and Best Actor categories.
Latin American views and independent creations
The Latin American Views section will feature four films from Chile, Argentina and Guatemala. Enjoy for example, the Berlinale 2015 award-winning ‘Ixcanul’, or the drama ‘Death Will Come and Shall Have Eyes’, directed by one of the greatest talents of contemporary Chilean film, José Luis Torres Leiva.
The psychological drama ‘La quietud’ (‘The Quietude’ in English) by Argentinean director Pablo Tropero will surely be another film of interest.
