Women in politics

On the 19th of March 2019, the American Center in Prague will be screening the film '14 Women', along with a discussion with three Czech female MPs on the number of women in politics in the Czech Republic and abroad.

‘14 Women’ is a 2007 documentary about women in high positions in American politics, directed by Mary Lambert and narrated by the actress Anette Bening. Between the years 1789 and 2006, 1875 senators were elected. Only 35 of them were women. In 2006, 14 women were elected to the Senate, a number which seemed miraculous. Lambert’s film focuses on these women who have reached one of the highest levels in American politics.

A glance backstage

The filmmakers peered backstage, looking into the family background of the women. Mary Lambert’s sister is Blanche Lincoln, who served as Senator for Arkansas. The producer Nicole Boxer’s sister is a Senator for California. Therefore, the filmmakers could also focus on aspects of the lives of the politicians that they might have been off limits in other circumstances. ‘14 Women’ discusses the phenomenon of the ‘glass ceiling’ dividing men and women in American politics, the difficulties women face in getting to Congress, and the difficulties female politicians experience communicating with their colleagues.

The situation in the Czech Republic

What is the situation in the Czech Republic? The discussion following the screening will try to answer this question. Four women will take part in the discussion: Olga Richterová (Czech Pirate Party), Vice-Chair of the Committee on Social Policy of the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic, Kateřina Valachová (Czech Social Democratic Party), Vice-Chair of the Committee on Science, Education, Culture, Youth and Sport of the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic, Markéta Pekarová Adamová (TOP09), Vice-Chairwoman of the Committee on Social Policy of the Chamber of Deputies of the Czech Parliament and Veronika Šprincová, Director of the Forum 50%.

We want more women in politics

The Forum 50% co-organises the projection and the discussion. Forum 50% is a non-profit organization that supports a balanced representation of women and men in politics and decision-making positions. Although women make up more than 50 % of the population, their representation in politics is only 20% on average.
